My first painting of 2014, “Afternoon at Pub”, adapted from a photo I took last summer. The woman’s bright red suit jacket really caught my eye – she was the bright flower in an otherwise dull and common pub room. Plus I loved the idea that this old couple were out together enjoying a cold beer on a hot afternoon and they weren’t at the VLTs. They didn’t stay long but while they were there, they provided a lovely and interesting contrast to the other patrons.
I love the way her jacket and his shirt jump out of the otherwise drear background. Did you use a separate background wash for the jug and glass? They look very cool and refreshing…
