I decided to try painting something I don’t think I’ve tried before with pastels – flowers. Two tiny, quick pastel paintings “Blooming on the Back Fence 1 and 2” from photos of lilies we had before that corner was re-done (so I guess they’re a kind of memory painting).
I am really enjoying painting on black, especially since I discovered using a piece of pipe insulation to lay down black pastel as a ground on my sanded papers saves my fingertips from being scraped off! (Thanks to pastelist Karen Margulis for that tip – she credits Terry Ludwig.)

I loved the lilies in the “Lower forty” of the back yard. They evoke the wildness of that spot – a splash of colour among the weeds and tall grass.
Weeds and tall grass! That’s why they’re not there anymore, but they were beautiful for a while….
